Voltaire - Graveyard Picnic

Listen to Graveyard Picnic on Rhapsody

If you haven't figured it out from this site, I am a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe.  There is little denying the influence he has had on the genre and how is works are still as potent today as they were when they were first published.  I've always found it a bit of a shame that the Edgar Allan Poe award is awarded in the Mystery field because horror was to slow to grab the name up.  The Bram Stoker award is still cool enough, but Poe to me is what horror is all about.  Apparently singer/songwriter Voltaire agrees with me, since his Graveyard Picnic is a nice little tribute to the man.

I really have no clue how to describe Voltaire.  I believe I listed him under Goth and Rock on the site, but only because I wasn't sure where else to put him.  He is most definitely unique and his works usually are morbidly comical.  Perhaps this is the wrong place to start with him as Graveyard Picnic is pretty serious for Voltaire, but I can't help it.  It is about Poe!

Graveyard Picnic appears on the album Boo Hoo and is a pretty simple song though not overly horrific in nature.  In fact, its offers some good advice.  When life gets a little too much, climb through a cemetery fence in Baltimore and sit down next to Poe's grave and kick back and read his works.  Good advice.  For those that live in Baltimore.

2002 Projekt If you squirm at the Conqueror Worm
This is no place for thee
Or if you fright at the mere sight
Of the corpse of my Annabel Lee
If you fear there's something you hear
A heart beating under the floor
Still your heart, there's no need to start
It's just me having tea with Lenore

Edgar Allan Poe's birthday just passed on the 19th and the annual tradition of a stranger placing three red roses and half-full bottle of Cognac in the wee hours of the night were upheld (fortunately this time without all the ruckus that last year saw).  It seemed only natural to select Voltaire's Graveyard Picnic then to pay tribute to the man and his works.
