The Booth
I love horror films that revolve around a radio DJ and strange (or obsessed) callers and there just aren't enough of them anymore. I'm sure it has to do with the onset of Caller ID and easily traceable numbers that takes away from the fun of a film, but it really is a shame. In fact, I recently rented The Night Listener assuming that I was getting a freaky flick about a radio DJ that fielded calls on his radio show. Turns out that it was a show about a radio DJ that took some calls on his own time while researching a subject for his radio show. Not a bad film, but I was still disappointed since it wasn't a good old radio show horror film. Give me Play Misty for Me anytime. You can imagine how quickly I jumped when I heard about The Booth from Japan. Asian horror is all the rage and to have one address one of my favorite subjects... I had to see it.
The Booth opens back in the old day of radio when the said DJ receives a chilling call and inexplicably hangs himself. The studio he broadcast from was shut down with the rumors of a haunting and closed for many years. Fast forward to the present and to a suave young man named Shogo who is the host of a popular relationship advice radio show in Tokyo. His current studio is under renovation, so he is forced to broadcast from the out-of-date haunted studio and he is none to happy about it. He is a brash and egotistical but has the women and his listeners eating out of his hand. His staff all seem to dislike him, but work for the greater success of the radio show.
The topic of the show for the night in question is what horrible things people have said to one another. Shogo encourages his fans to call in with their nightmare stories and share them with the rest of the listeners. All goes well until one conversation abruptly ends with some odd distortion and the listener suddenly screaming “Liar!” at Shogo. Suddenly the tension betweens to grow between Shogo and his staff, who he accuses of trying to sabotage his show, and the ever increasing strange calls that seem to blame Shogo for something. As the film progresses, we find out that he has a few skeletons in his closet as well and is being forced to face them.
Despite only a 74 minute length, the film delivers a good amount of tension and chills as it progresses. The film holds its cards close to the vest and you are never really sure what is real or what is imaginary. I did feel that the story hit a few bumps towards the end that knocked it a bit off course, but for the most part, the film held together well. The Booth was a nice twist on the radio show-based horror film and left me wanting to see a return to that plot device. It seems that there is still plenty of ground to explore there.
