Horrorfest - Wicked Little Things

Okay, so now it seems a little dated to be talking about Horrorfest, but I had two to go before I had to step away and what else can I say... I'm a closure type of person.  So for today and tomorrow, I'll wrap up the last two films from After Dark Films' Horrorfest, starting with J.S. Cardone's Wicked Little Things.

I have to admit that I enjoyed Cardone's The Forsaken, though it seems I am in the minority.  Maybe it is because I had heard pretty poor things about the film, so my expectations were really low by the time I got around to see it.  Who knows?  But I thought the little vampire/road movie was actually a fun little romp.  Not something I've watched since or plan to again, but fun for what it was.

So it seems I had quite the opposite reaction as I followed the process of making Wicked Little Things.  Originally, Tobe Hooper was slated to direct this little opus and that alone seemed to excite a lot of fans.  Frankly, it made me concerned since Hooper's latest films have been less than stellar.  And since Jace Anderson and Adam Gierasch, who co-wrote Wicked Little Things with Ben Nedivi, also wrote Hooper's really disappointing Toolbox Murders and Crocodile, my expectations were quickly lowered.    Hooper's departure and Cardone taking the lead wasn't necessarily a bad thing in my mind.  Still, Wicked Little Things seemed like the most “Hollywood” of the films presented in Horrorfest and, despite sounding like a pretty cool concept, I wasn't expecting much.

Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised by this film.  In fact, it turned out to be one of my favorites from the festival.  I would say it was my favorite, though as I mentioned in my review of The Abandoned, I think that film will take that honor in the long run.

Of course, anytime someone uses murderous little child zombies running around and snacking away on the human race, I've got to give it kudos.  Got me why (maybe the whole innocence of children turned on its head thing), but I've always dug those creepy kid movies.  Even when the film is bad as it was with The Children, those damn black fingernails and frying the adults with a hug was still unsettling to me.  So when they actually pull it off well, as with Wicked Little Things, I've got to give credit where it is due.

I won't bother to rehash the plot here, but I did find it interesting that the filmmakers built in a little backstory and history about these delightful little tykes that gave you a little understanding (and sympathy?) for their nocturnal diets.  Of course, there was little in the way of explanation of how children buried alive become ravenous zombies that seem to have little qualms about eating anything and anyone in their way, but hey...  It didn't need one.

With maybe the exception of Dark Ride, I wasn't necessarily wrong about the film being one of the more “Hollywood” of the films.  It did have the standard plot and situation cliches that typically drag down the genre and had a really packaged atmosphere, but man...  It had creepy little kid zombies!  Okay, so it had a little more to offer than that.  The story takes place in rural Pennsylvania which led to some great scenery and fantastic cinematography.  The acting was actually above-par for your typical horror film and the story was actually fairly intriguing.  Sure, we all know what will ultimately happen and who will live and who will die, but it was a fun ride.  A ride I am sure I will take again someday.
