On September 25, 2004, the Philippine newspaper Sun.Star carried a report of two teenagers being attacked by the creature known as an aswang in Tantangan, South Cotabato. The aswang is believed to be a mythical creature in the country, but that doesn't stop the multiple reports of sightings and attacks of the aswang, as well as vendetta crimes against citizens that are believed to be the creature in disguise.

The stories of the aswang (one of many names it is known as) are generally meant to something of a shapeshifter-type creature that is akin to a witch and/or a vampire. It can take a human form during the day and even carry a full-time job, but transforms into any variety of animals or an ugly old woman with a black tongue, wild eyes, and long nails. It is said to prey on the ill, the young and old, pregnant women, and even has a taste for fresh human corpses.

In this account, a 16-year old boy reportedly fired a shot at a "big black dog with red, glowering eyes" as it attacked his 14-year old brother. The creature is said to have fled, though the bullet apparently struck his brother in the leg. The public reaction ranged from skepticism to strong conviction that the boys were telling the truth.

The neighbor's reactions were hardly unusual for the country. The Aswang Festival was held between the years of 2004-2006 in capital of the Capiz province in the Philippines, Roxas City, which was met with both excitement, as well as derision from local church groups who claimed that the festival represented a celebration of evil. The organizers argued that it was simply to downplay the long-standing beliefs of the country, while trying to provide a boost to the local economy of the city. At the end of day, the religious pressure accompanied by political pressure ultimately forced the organizers to scrap the annual event.
