Since its debut in Tokyo, Japan in 1995, Body Worlds exhibits have garnered both a tremendous amount of interest, as well as controversy. The exhibits are made up of human corpses and organs that are preserved through a technique known as plastination that was developed by the exhibit creator and promoter, Gunther von Hagens. The popularity of the original exhibit has been spawned into four exhibitions that have traveled to just under 50 museums throughout North America, Europe and Asia. A fifth exhibit called Body Worlds & The Mirror of Time is set to debut in London, England this October.
The exhibits have been met with some controversy since first being unleashed on the public, leading to legislation around the world that sought to prevent or maintain some control over the public display of a human cadaver. All of the corpses seen in the displays were donated specifically for use in the exhibitions, though the identities, ages, and cause of death of the bodies are not disclosed in the exhibit. This has led to some laws that require the exhibitors to provide proof of former consent from those on display. Further criticism has been leveled that the exhibit is overtly sensationalistic and/or perpetrates sexual stereotypes in how the corpses are posed and presented.
Since the exhibits move from city to city, we do our best at Dark Destinations to keep you up to date on their current locations. Just last Friday, Body Worlds 2 started its run at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences in Houston, Texas, though it was somewhat hampered by the arrival of Hurricane Ike. The museum is currently scheduled to re-open tomorrow for those interested. Body Worlds 3 is set to debut on Thursday, September 18, at The Leonardo in Salt Lake City, Utah.
