On this date in 1925, a 21 year-old man from Georgia walked into a Kroger store/warehouse in St. Louis, Missouri and held the place up. Charles Arthur Floyd netted around $11,000 from the robbery, but his gains were short-lived as he was quickly apprehended for the crime. The story goes that one of the witnesses of the crime called him a "pretty boy" and the moniker would stick, much to the disdain of Floyd. A couple of months later he would receive his first sentencing and spend the next three and a half years in Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City. When "Pretty Boy" Floyd was let out after serving his sentence, few could have imagined that this small-time crook was on his way to being declared a "public enemy" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His crimes varied from bank robberies to murder, including the infamous Kansas City Massacre, before coming to a violent end in 1934.
Missouri State Penitentiary has since been closed down, but remains in downtown Jefferson City to this day. Throughout its history however, the prison played host to a number of infamous criminals.
