Today marks the anniversaries of the death of three cultural icons. On August 16:
1938: Blues musician Robert Johnson dies in Greenwood, Mississippi of what is believed to be strychnine poisoning at the young age of 27. Legend states that Johnson sold his soul to the devil at the crossroads for his skills at guitar - a legend fueled by some of Johnson's own songs like Me and the Devil Blues, Hellhound on My Trail, and Cross Road Blues. A jealous husband reportedly poisoned Johnson after he flirted with the man's wife during his last gig at the Three Forks Store.

1956: Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi died of a heart attack in his home in Los Angeles. Lugosi was best known for his performance of the sinister count in the stage adaptations and subsequent 1931 film adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel Dracula. The actor was laid to rest at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. According to the wishes of his wife and son, he was buried wearing his Dracula cape. He was 73.

1977: The King of Rock, Elvis Presley, passed away at his home in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 42 of an apparent heart attack brought on by long-term drug abuse. He was initially laid to rest at a local cemetery, but concerns that overzealous fans might attempt to steal the body, the bodies of Presley and his mother were exhumed and relocated to the Meditation Garden at his home known as Graceland. According to some, the ghost of Elvis has been seen at Graceland in the years following his death.
Keep an eye out for Elvis at Graceland.
