Eminem - Kim
Listen to Kim on Rhapsody
Okay, so a date late with this horror track of the day. My apologies. As you can see, I'm backdating this so I can get two new tracks up here today. As it has worked out, it has actually presented me with the opportunity to tackle two songs by the same artist that are related in content. However, I'll opt for a cover version for the second song to keep with the different-genre-each-day theme as well as to provide a different perspective.
I do not need to introduce Eminem to anyone. He is one of the most successful artists out there in the last decade and a half and has pissed off as many people as he has made fans. His work has been labeled as homophobic and a misogynist and has even garnered the attention of the United States Secret Service for his lyrical rants against George W. Bush. Other artists have rallied to his support and his music has started many debates about just how much free speech is a good thing. He has also racked up countless awards, including several Grammys and even an Academy Award.
One of the most frequent examples cited for its misogynist and violent lyrics is Eminem's track Kim. The song appeared on his 2000 album, The Marshall Mathers LP, and ignited a firestorm of controversy. Well, that track and Stan and Kill You and pretty much all of the other tracks too.
We have looked at more than a few tunes with strong depictions of violence and more than a few of those have been directed towards women. Violence against women is hardly an unknown theme in music. What makes Kim different, I guess, is that the female in the song and the title's namesake happened to be Eminem's wife at the time. And the song doesn't end pretty for her...
See it all makes sense doesn't it?
You and your husband have a fight
One of you tries to grab a knife
And during the struggle he accidentally get his Adam's apple sliced
And while this is going on
His son has woke up and he walks in
She panics and he gets his throat cut
So now they're both dead and you slashed your own throat
So now its double homicide and suicide, with no note
Interestingly enough, Kim is actually the "prequel" to the song '97 Bonnie & Clyde from the album before, which happens to be the next entry. Since Eminem presented them out of order, I figured I would too. Another interesting note is that the label thought that the lyrics, "There's a four year-old little boy laying dead with a slit throat in your living room," went a little too far and wiped some of the words from the "Explicit" version of the album, despite the song ending with Eminem screaming, "Now bleed bitch, bleed!" The "Edited" version of the album dropped the song altogether.
The rumor is that Eminem's wife had prodded him to write a song about her and they happened to be going through a rough stint when he finally did, unfortunately for her. It was further exasperated by reports of her watching him perform the song on stage with a doll made up to represent her and the audience cheering him on as he thrashed it about the stage. Needless to say, a divorce was on the horizon, though the two would later reconcile... only to get another divorce.
