Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla

Listen to Godzilla on Rhapsody

If there was ever a horror track that needed little introduction or explanation, it has to be Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla.  I often wondered if this is one of those songs that has haunted the band since or something they completely embraced.  I had this uneasy feeling that at every concert, they hear someone (or multiple people) in the crowd screaming, "Godzilla!" in between every break of songs until they finally played it.  Last year, I finally got my chance to see the band live and I had my answer.  I was sitting up next to a couple of college students who did just that between every song and sometimes during the prolonged guitar solos or jams.  After BOC played the song, the students disappeared altogether.  I guess they got what they came for.

In a way, it is a shame.  Not that Godzilla isn't a great song.  It is.  And it was really good live.  But for band as introspective and so willing to probe the darker aspects of life as BOC is, it is a bit depressing that this simple little tune is what the drunk masses want.  I think the students were even gone before the band broke into Don't Fear the Reaper, another of their legendary tunes and personally, one of my favorites.  The good news is that the band still appeared to have a blast themselves when they launched into Godzilla and even added some new touches to the old classic as they went.

Spectres History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of men

Godzilla is of course inspired by the Japanese series of films that got their start in 1954 with the aptly named Godzilla.  A creature born by the by-product of nuclear weapons.  We all know him in one fashion or another and have done our best to forget the American rehash that amounted to a whole lot of nonsense.  It is really kind of pointless to go on further, since we're all familiar with Godzilla.  However, I will point out my distress at the very strange reinvention of the genre going on by removing Godzilla from horror (which the film was) and trying to re-classify the film as a "monster movie".  There is a similar thing going on with King Kong.  Personally, it is hard to imagine just what genre a "monster movie" would fall under if not horror.  I get classifications, but when you lose sight of the original intent...

At any rate, here is Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla before anybody out there starts screaming for it.  While maybe not one of BOC's more thought-provoking pieces, it is still just a good old fashioned rock tune.  It is refreshing to know that the band is still willing to embrace the song and its cult following as well.  If for nothing else, to just shut up those drunk idiots in the audience.  So if you go to see BOC live and just want to hear Godzilla, have patience and enjoy everything else they have to offer in the meantime.  They will play it even without someone pestering them for it and you will discover a whole treasure trove of other great tunes at the same time.
