Buckethead - Post Office Buddy
Listen to Post Office Buddy on Rhapsody
If you haven't had a chance to listen to self-proclaimed horror fan Buckethead yet, you are in for a treat. If you have never seen him in concert, you are in for even more of a treat. The two words that come to mind when describing Buckethead are brilliant and unusual.
Buckethead is a versatile solo artist that kind of does his own thing. He can and does play multiple instruments on his albums, but first and foremost, he is a guitarist. And a damn good guitarist at that. There are only a small number of artists out there that can be successful at releasing albums that guitar-centric. While there is occasional dialogue and lyrics, the majority of his tracks are driven by the guitar.
He is so good that he was picked to be the slated replacement for Slash on the new Guns N' Roses album. He spent four years with the band, working on the long-awaited Chinese Democracy, and appeared on their abruptly-halted 2002 tour, before parting ways. He did record most, if not all, of the album, but it is unclear whether his contribution will appear on the final release, which is still forthcoming.
Now for the unusual... Well, for starters, he wears a white plastic mask and a KFC (doesn't anyone say Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore?) bucket on his head. He claims the mask is the same that Michael Myers dons in the Halloween films, but it looks slightly more generic - Probably something to do with copyright issues.
I had the pleasure of seeing Buckethead as part of the 2002 Guns N' Roses tour. When his guitar solo came up, instead of seeing what would typically be Slash breaking into a guitar rendition of The Godfather theme music, I saw a guy with a bucket on his head come out and start whipping around some nunchaku (nunchucks). After that demonstration was over, he broke out into a robotic dance and some break dancing. Finally, he grabbed his guitar and did things to it that most living guitarists would be unable to duplicate. Unusual, but brilliant.
Post Office Buddy came from his 1994 solo album Giant Robot. It is mostly instrumental inter-cut with telephone messages left by some guy, who apparently met some girl at the post office. As the song continues, the messages become more and more sinister, as does the music and sound effects. I don't know why, but the echoing baby cries are just unsettling.
Since he is a horror fan, it is safe to say that we will look at some of his other work down the line. Its not like there isn't much to choose from. His discography consists of 21 solo albums and contribution on at least 33 more. And that is not counting the upcoming Chinese Democracy. So if you like what you hear, there is plenty more to choose from.
