Lonesome Bob - The Plans We Made
Listen to The Plans We Made on Rhapsody
Like all forms of music, country has more than a few songs that can be considered horror. If you dig into the roots of country music, you will find a deeply rooted dark side that is as chilling as some of the darkest metal tunes out there today. Perhaps, even more so. Naturally, those dark moments in Nashville history inspired their fair share of artists, who still carry on that tradition today.
Lonesome Bob is one such artist. Although he hails from New Jersey, his songwriting career led him to Nashville and the musical establishment that is country music. However, unlike so many of the artists there these days, Lonesome Bob was deeply influenced by the scarier going-ons of early country music and it shows in his music. Perhaps that is why Rhapsody chose to list him as and alt-country artist, a term which still baffles me to no end.
The Plans We Made is perhaps his most chilling masterpiece to date. It is a twisted little duet with Allison Moorer that leads you down a dark road without you knowing it. At first, it is a nice little tale of love at first sight with a bit of hesitation to thrown in. All we know of these "plans" is that they are intended to lead the duo to the altar someday, after the two "fix our mistakes and we'll have forever". These mistakes come to light in the third verse.
The woman I married, now lies there sleeping
Peaceful in dreams as she lay
I sit down beside her and pull out my pistol
I kiss her and blow her away
Yep, so the mistakes are a couple of spouses that happen to be in the way of their true love. Naturally, plans go awry and they don't lead to the altar, but someplace entirely different by the end of The Plans We Made.
The song appears on Lonesome Bob's 1997 debut album, Things Fall Apart, but this version comes courtesy of Bloodshot Records' 1996 compilation album, Nashville: The Other Side of the Alley... Vol. 3, which features more than a few darker country tunes. I know the content of the song is probably the reason, but it is a shame that The Plans We Made didn't get more airplay. Sure, it is pretty bleak but it also happens to be a damn good tune.
