Velvet Acid Christ - Exquisite Stench

Listen to Exquisite Stench on Rhapsody

Jumping back over to the industrial horror side of things, I bring you the world of Velvet Acid Christ.  The band is from Denver, Colorado and has evolved into the brainchild of co-founder Bryan Erickson, who has had to navigate his way through a rotating door of band members and various record label issues.  Velvet Acid Christ has found crowds from both the goth and industrial scene, mixing together those elements with electric dance and an imposing soundscape, complete with a variety of audio samples from pop culture in their early music.

Exquisite Stench is a good representation of the band in the 90's.  It came from 1997 release, Calling Ov the Dead, which was a turbulent time for Velvet Acid Christ.  After their label rejected the album because it was not “edgy” enough, contributor Gary Slaughter left the band, leaving Erickson and Chris Workman to rework the album.

Featuring the typical dark, misanthropic lyrics that are a bit of a staple of Velvet Acid Christ, Exquisite Stench is one of the more violent tracks on the album.  Further complimenting the song is a variety of samples from Hellraiser: Bloodline, including one that starts things off and gives the title of the song meaning: “I can smell the exquisite stench of what you really are.”

Tear apart the nation
Call subversive infiltration
Live with a lie
Crush your head
Cause its dead

Not exactly uplifting I know.  Erickson placed the band on hiatus in 2001, while he overcame his dependence on drugs and replaced it with exercise and an organic vegan diet.  While it might seem slightly strange for a man who once wrote the song, Fun With Knives, to make such a dramatic change, it is somehow very suiting in the world of Velvet Acid Christ.  The band's last album, Lust for Blood, shows some musical growth of the band, but still manages to stay true to what makes Velvet Acid Christ so good.
