When you read the words “Halloween Capitol of the World” perhaps Salem, Massachusetts springs to mind. However, long before The Witch City became a hot spot for Halloween tourism, a city in the Mid-Western US had already officially claimed the title. Anoka, Minnesota is the actual Halloween Capitol of the World.
In 1920, the city of Anoka decided it needed to do something to reduce the number of pranks played by children on Halloween. It was decided that it would be best to channel the children’s energy into a Halloween parade. The parade was a success and became an annual tradition. The tradition grew in scope to include more and more events and became part of Anoka’s local pride.
In 1937, the city petitioned the US Congress and officially was declared to be the “Halloween Capitol of the World” by Congress. In the decades since, the events held during the week leading up to Halloween have continued to grow. There are multiple contests for both locals and visitors as well as fireworks, at least three different parades, live music, and much more.
The town has also had its share of hauntings and offers ghost tours from May through October each year.
Join in the Halloween festivities in Anoka.
